Question No: 2024/2267
Question (Thomas Turrell AM) 18th July 2024
Since TfL's recorded bus collisions in 2023 were the highest in a decade, did the Mayor ever request that TfL consider the merits of analysing the costs of bus collisions, as he promised in his response to question 2016/4555?
Answer (Sadiq Khan) 23rd July 2024
In the development of each Bus Safety Standard measure, a cost-benefit analysis has been undertaken to assess the benefits of implementing a particular measure. This analysis is based on Department for Transport Business Case guidance on the economic value for the prevention of casualties. The analysis also includes consideration of other costs, such as insurance claims. These reports are published on the Transport for London (TfL) website: Bus safety data - Transport for London (tfl.gov.uk)
The central focus of my Vision Zero ambition is eliminating death and serious injury on London’s roads. Reliably calculating the costs of bus collisions which can have direct and indirect costs, some of which only emerge over an extended period of time, would take a large amount of resource to perform, and would not alter the key measures which already form part of the Bus Safety Strategy to achieve further reductions in the number of people killed or seriously injured on or by a bus.
