Question No: 2024/1808
Question (Thomas Turrell AM) 20th June 2024:
Is your School Streets initiative inclusive to disabled Londoners and what provisions have you made outside schools during drop off and pick up hours?
Answer (Sadiq Khan) 25th June 2024
I am committed to creating a fairer, more accessible and inclusive transport network for disabled Londoners. While the planning, delivery and operation of School Streets is the responsibility of boroughs working with local schools and communities, Transport for London (TfL) provides support through funding, data and guidance.
- TfL’s School Streets Guidance to boroughs makes it clear that all schemes must comply with equalities, accessibility, security and inclusion duties. The guidance includes recommendations to:
- Engage with any local groups, care homes or facilities for older and disabled people to consider access needs in the planning stage
- Grant exemptions from access restrictions to blue badge holders and transport for SEND (special educational needs and disabilities)
- Consider whether pedestrian space outside the school should be cleared, decluttered or widened
- Ensure that informal signage can easily be read by those who are visually impaired, and to avoid A-frame signs which can be hazardous to visually impaired people
- Ensure that any equipment used caters to the needs of those with disabled access requirements.
