Question No: 2024/3634
Question (Thomas Turrell AM): 21st November 2025
What conversations have you had with Thames Water since they were fined £104m for sewage discharges?
Answer (Sadiq Khan): 26th November 2024
I have been pressing Thames Water to improve their performance since I became Mayor. Since re-election earlier this year, I have met with the Secretary of State for environment and rural affairs, environmental regulators and NGOs to push for major change in the water sector. We know standards need to be raised urgently and by Thames Water in particular and I welcome the action Government is taking to commission a review of the water industry and regulation.
My Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy wrote to Thames Water’s Chief Executive in August following the fine and met with him in September. He called on the company to tackle their performance issues, take a fair approach to bills and to provide reassurance of their financial resilience and continued ability to deliver their essential services. I will continue to hold Thames Water to account, and I am pleased to be working with them and other key stakeholders in shaping a plan to improve the health of our waterways.
