Question No: 2024/2269
Question (Thomas Turrell AM) 18th July 2024
Please can you provide the latest statistics and targets for green roofs in London?
Answer (Sadiq Khan): 23rd July 2024
There are no London-wide targets for green roofs. Under the London Plan 2021, most major developments should demonstrate achievement of Urban Greening Factor targets, and green roofs may form part of a development’s contribution to greening. (See Policy G5, UGF target score is 0.4 for predominately residential uses and 0.3 for predominately commercial uses).
Presence of green roofs is not monitored London-wide. This 2019 report estimated green roof coverage in Greater London at 1.5 million m2 and provides other breakdowns of the estimates (such as green roof area per inhabitant per borough, based on 2017 data).
London-wide greening targets, as expressed in the Mayor’s 2018 London Environment Strategy include a target for more than half of the city being green by 2050 (objective 5.1). Green roofs are an essential part of ensuring more than half of the city is green by 2050.
