Question No: 2024/2933
Question (Thomas Turrell AM): 12th September 2024
Following the recommendations produced in the Climate Resilience Review, what conversations have you had with the Government about plans for a new reservoir?
Answer (Sadiq Khan): 17th September 2024
My team met with former Minister of the previous government Rebecca Pow to discuss water issues. My team highlighted the need for a new reservoir as being a crucial measure to ensure London’s future water supply resilience in response to climate change and housing growth. They also highlighted that planning must be accelerated to ensure timely delivery. This position was further supported by the recommendations of the London Climate Resilience Review which says a new reservoir to supply southeast England is needed.
I have also met with Ofwat and written to Thames Water highlighting that in addition to tackling pollution, they must also address the urgent need for new water resources infrastructure. GLA officers recently responded to a Thames Water consultation supporting the proposal for a new reservoir. This is subject to appropriate environment mitigation being put in place and that new water infrastructure must not detract from addressing water demand management, which must happen in parallel.
