Question No: 2024/3635
Question (Thomas Turrell AM): 21st November 2024
Will you commit to ensuring the Tideway Tunnel’s remaining 17 valves will open on time next year?
Answer (Sadiq Khan): 26th November 2024
I have no specific powers in relation to water infrastructure, but Tideway are aware of the importance of this new piece of environmental infrastructure for London. Tideway is key to delivering the step change in water quality that is needed in the tidal river Thames in London. As I’ve said previously more is needed to improve water quality further, including in London’s tributary rivers and canal network and other parts of the river Thames upstream of central London. I’ve set out my intention to convene those partners that will be necessary to make London’s waterways cleaner and healthier.
Tideway kindly hosted a visit in September where I saw parts of the project and met some of the key stakeholders in delivering my plan for cleaning up London’s rivers. Tideway also keep my officers updated of project progress and they have not raised any concerns about progress with the tunnel commissioning.
