London Assembly Member for Bexley and Bromley, Thomas Turrell, has asked for the Mayor of London to consider including Belvedere in the extension of the Docklands Light Railway, which is planned between Beckton and Thamesmead.
Answering a separate question about his Transport Strategy the Mayor made reference to the planned extension, which allowed Thomas to ask a supplementary question calling for the extension to
Under Transport for London’s current plans a new branch of the DLR will be built after Gallions Reach to then serve new stations at Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead. While supporting these proposals, both Thomas and Bexley Council would like to see the line come from Thamesmead to a new station at Belvedere. This would allow the DLR connect with the existing rail services, additionally, this would connect the DLR to a possible future extension of the Elizabeth line.
Thomas, a former Thamesmead resident, said:
“Thamesmead has been left off the rail network for too long. Extending the DLR to Thamesmead is a long overdue step has my full support. But we have got to maximise the potential of this extension, and that means connecting it to the existing rail services, so bring the line that little bit further and bring it to Belvedere.”
