Question No: 2024/1606
Question (Thomas Turrell AM) 23rd May 2024:
There are currently around 18,500 electric vehicle charging points in London that were installed with the help of Government funding. When do you believe you will reach the 40,000 figure as set out in your manifesto?
Answer (Sadiq Khan) 25th June 2024:
Since I have been Mayor, I have overseen a massive growth in charging infrastructure. London now has nearly 20,000 public charge points, around 18,500 of which are slow to fast charge points, with the majority delivered through London borough contracts. Much of this borough delivery was funded through the Go Ultra Low City Scheme and On-street Residential Charge Point Scheme. I expect to see the number of charge points delivered by boroughs increase substantially using the almost £39m of Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure funding allocated to London.
Transport for London has delivered over 300 rapid charge points up to 2020, utilising government funding. This delivery, at a time when there was almost no rapid charging infrastructure in London, demonstrated to private investors the potential of London as a market. With private sector installations, the number of rapid charge points has increased to over 1,140. TfL is now undertaking new rapid charging delivery, without any government funding. In 2023, TfL awarded three contracts to deliver a further 100 rapid charging bays on its road network and is also tendering for a joint venture partner to deliver electric vehicle charging hubs on its land. Work continues to assess suitable sites for further delivery across TfL and wider GLA land. With planned public and private sector delivery, I am confident that London will have 40,000 charge points by 2030.
