Question No: 2024/1609
Question (Thomas Turrell AM) 23rd May 2024
Please can you set out how you intend to help schools reach net zero as promised in your manifesto, and whether you will be providing funding to every school to help them achieve this?
Answer (Sadiq Khan) 29 May 2024
In my 2024 manifesto, I committed to a pilot to help schools in London reach net zero with the hope that with a change of government this programme could be supercharged. Officers will develop more details on our approach in coming months.
Question No: 2024/1610
Question (Thomas Turrell AM) 23rd May 2024
How much do you estimate it will cost for every school to reach net zero, as outlined in your manifesto?
Answer (Sadiq Khan) 29 May 2024
My manifesto included a commitment to a pilot with schools to help them become net zero with the opportunity to turbocharge deliver in the event of a more ambitious national government. The cost of getting to net zero for each school will vary, depending on a number of factors such as building age and its current energy performance, just as it does for all other buildings.
Question No: 2024/1611
Question (Thomas Turrell AM) 23rd May 2024
When are you aiming for all of London’s schools to reach net zero, as outlined in your manifesto?
Answer (Sadiq Khan) 29 May 2024
Please see my answer to MQ 2024/1609 – Net Zero for Schools (1).
Question No: 2024/1612
Question (Thomas Turrell AM) 23rd May 2024
Can you guarantee that the cost of schools reaching net zero will not be taken from their existing budgets?
Answer (Sadiq Khan) 29 May 2024
Please see my answer to MQ 2024/1609 – Net Zero for Schools (1). As mentioned the budget for the programme will be decided as part of that work but the cost of the pilot will not be put on the schools. The programme will be looking to reduce not only carbon emissions but also the cost of energy bills in schools, so I expect that this programme will allow schools to spend more of their existing budgets, not less, on young Londoners.
Question No: 2024/1613
Question (Thomas Turrell AM) 23rd May 2024
What additional resources will schools be given to help them reach your net zero manifesto commitments?
Answer (Sadiq Khan) 29 May 2024
Please see my answer to MQ 2024/1609 – Net Zero for Schools (1). This will look at what additional support, beyond my Zero Carbon Accelerator, schools would need to help London meet its 2030 net zero target.
