Written question to the Mayor of London on his target for replacement tree planting. Asked on the 23rd May and answered on the 29th May.
Question No: 2024/1615
Question (Thomas Turrell AM) 23rd May 2024:
We welcome the planting of 500,000 trees in your first two terms. Please can you set out the number of trees you are working towards planting this term?
Answer (Sadiq Khan) 29th May 2024:
The GLA takes tree planting very seriously, as part of our response to the climate emergency, to support nature recovery, and for Londoners’ health and wellbeing. This is reflected in my London Environmental Strategy, in which I committed to a 10% increase in canopy cover by 2050. In my first two terms in office, we have already planted more than half a million trees to contribute towards this increase. In my 2024 manifesto, I committed to continue to plant trees, focusing on the areas of London that need them most. Officials are being asked to develop programmes that will reflect this commitment.
We co-ordinate and work with the London Urban Forest Partnership to identify ways to better protect, manage and expand the urban forest, all of which are important in achieving canopy cover increase. Our tree planting programme will form an important part of this work.
